A second opinion: Iron Man 2

Having had many a conversation with my brother about the movie, and neither of us can quite settle on how good the movie was, I'll just enter my thoughts about Iron Man 2 here.

The first Iron Man was amazing. I loved it, and so did a lot of you. The second one cranks just about everything from the first movie up, but fails in some of the most important area. First and foremost, the 'bad-guys' in Iron Man 2 are way better than the first. Iron Monger and The Ten Rings didn't really feel like bad guys to me, they felt more like nuisances. In Iron Man 2, Whiplash and Justin Hammer hit the scene and I actually felt like Iron Man's life was threatened for a bit, though the wind down at the end was a bit quick and unsatisfying. Then again, the end just may have seemed really quick because the middle really, really dragged. I don't know exactly why it felt so slow, but my guess is the banter. The banter in the first movie was grade A stuff, quips and quipples being thrown left and right, both exceedingly humorous and offering a little bit of insight per line. The sequel had very little of this sharp dialogue; there was some good banter at the beginning and the end. I think this has something to do with the fact that the first movie really wasn't scripted, therefor the dialogue just flowed more. As my co-worker put it: he could imagine them sitting around the set just messing around and eventually they'd go 'There, that one is totally going in the movie!' Basically, what I'm trying to say is the dialogue in Iron Man 2 felt duller, less organic if you will; which when compared to the first movie, is it's greatest downfall.

On the bright side though, Whiplash was way, way better than expected. Being a semi heavy comic book fan, I was surprised when they first named Whiplash as the villain. In all of my comic book dealings I have never heard of him, and the excuse I'm running with is I'm more of a DC guy. The best argument I heard against him was he was only a melee class guy, all you had to do was shoot him from a distance and you'd be good; and the movie did an okay job dealing with this. I was especially happy when he turned out to be more like the Crimson Dynamo than I expected or heard he'd be, so he wasn't just a lame dude with whips.

So besides not being as sharp or unexpected as Iron Man (and a few plot holes that I'm not going to get into because I don't know where to begin (if interested (and be warned, there be spoilers here), check out Asylum's "The 12 Biggest Plot Holes in 'Iron Man 2'"), Iron Man 2 was okie dokie and you'd should see it if you liked the first one.

Judgment: 4 'Why isn't he called Gold Titanium Alloy Man?'s out of 5

  1. That link you posted about plot holes is a very poor incite. Most if not all those plot holes that are described are explained in the movie. You can see for yourself in the comments that most if not all the questions had been answered.
