Something Old: Final Fantasy III

Final Fantasy III by Matrix Software and Square Enix was one of the first games I bought for the DS, and I’m glad I did. One of the most important things to note is that this game is completely in 3D, so it’s not a direct port like Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls for the Game Boy Advance was. This transformation, I am happy to report, took nothing away from the game. Even the overworld is in 3D, but it’s still in a top down angle so it’s still very ‘Final Fantasy.’ Added bonus, the weapons you use are visible during battles and have a distinct model per weapon, a little touch that I really love (I hate looking at the same sword for a whole game for some reason). The magic and summons don’t look quite polished enough though, and some of the textures are really rough (though, if you keep in mind it’s an old game it makes it feel a bit retro). Also, the models of the characters are amazingly cute and they even show up differently in cutscenes depending on which job class they are in (and I love little touches like that). That reminds me, FFIII’s job system is really sweet. You start off with so many classes, and gain more advance classes as you progress through the story, which I like way better than previous games where you had to stick with the same classes the entire game. The battles are the battles we all know and love (at least most of us), except for magic is based on a system like Dungeons and Dragons (where you have so many spells to use, split up by spell level) and not with magic points (MP) that a lot of people are used to. Besides the lackluster textures, the only other bad thing I can say about Final Fantasy III is I get lost way too easily, which is also my main grip with Final Fantasy I (but that’s a different story). I would highly recommend this to people who love old games but hate to look at them and/or could do with a refreshing update of Final Fantasy III.
