Scare me once, shame on you; scare me twice, shame on me; scare me three times, well now you just need to start laying off the asdfing bats. I understand that Daybreakers was supposed to be scary, but with all the stupid bats it soon became annoying. Daybreakers is about the world overrun by vampires and humans are being hunted down to be farmed for blood, so far so good. Then comes along a scientist named Edward (if I hear one Twilight joke about this I will hunt you down!), played by Ethan Hawke, who is forced to team up with some humans, a group which includes Willem Dafoe, who have by some chance found the cure to vampirism.
I have to start by giving the Spierig brothers kudos for giving vampires their stones back. About. Asdfing. Time. The Spierig brothers also did a wonderful job of realizing a world run by vampires; from how they like their coffee (one spoon of blood or two?), to even littler things as how they drive during the day (with a UV alarm when the door is open too). Another upside to this movie is that Ethan Hawke gave yet another grand performance (though it could just be that he’s my favorite actor… nope), giving Edward the little nuances to help bring the character to life. Willem Dafoe was also pretty good, but I hated his character, so it kind of evened out.
Willem’s character was unfortunately not the only thing I disliked about this film. The first thing that struck me was the lack of a back-story. All that can be scraped from the film in this regard is that it started with a bat. There were no ‘whys,’ and I need to know these things! Secondly, the 3D just seemed off to me; and the worst parts are when a vampire gets exposed to the sun, just seemed off… Also, while I recognize that this was a gory movie, the gore was overdone and the effects gore-wise were pretty bad (especially the blood, it wasn’t thick enough). Furthermore, the whole cure was mind numbingly stupid, but on the plus side the brain numbing did help accept it I guess… Lastly, the story progression was bad (movie felt like it ended thirty minutes before it did), character progression was abrupt (ie: Edward’s brother), and the overall story was blah (premise: awesome; way it was told: blah).
Oh, one more thing: asdf bats.
Judgment: 5 “Well; it wasn’t Twilight”s out of 10
