Elementary

Sherlock Holmes: packed theatre, front row seats, huge pain in my neck, and it was still worth it. Guy Richie, of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch fame, was the director and he again did a superb job. Also, the casting was great. Robert Downey, Jr had the manic Sherlock Holmes down quite intrepidly, and the pairing of him with Jude Law, who played Dr. John Watson, worked really well and garnered a ton of laughs; I didn't think I was going to like it. Rachel McAdams, who played Irene Adler, wasn't completely on her game in the beginning but towards the end of the movie she was doing quite well.

The 1880s England was realized quite nicely with all the dirt and grime. Also, hats off to the costume department, I quite liked them; especially Holme's get up at the cemetery (though I didn't like Addler's red dress; it was a dress of the times, but I still didn't like it). Lastly, the 'inventions' like the shock rod seen in the trailers had a certain touch to them that I really enjoyed (don't think it was quite steampunk, but close (we'll go with 'pseudo-Victorian mechanical "steampunk" style').

The movie was, as told by a friend, not entirely like the books, but still very
enjoyable. He said that Holmes was only a thinker and not a fighter (though the books did mention him being an amateur boxer with some knowledge of martial arts (which is defiantly shown in the movie)). I really enjoyed the fights though, especially when Holmes said what he was going to do in slow motion (as if we're in his mind you see)and then he does it in normal time (plus I was totally in the mood for the amped up Holmes, don't think I could have gotten through a straight mystery movie). Furthermore, the other action sequences were pretty awesome, especially when Holmes, Watson and Addler get caught in an explosion in slow motion; they pulled the concussion effects of the bomb off extremely well.

Last but not least, the plot was interesting. It had all the air of mystery that one
would expect from a Sherlock Holmes movie, and a good mystery too (science versus magic thingy). Even better yet, everything wasn't handed to you like a normal movie where you already know the answer halfway through. In fact, half of the mysteries were pretty unsolvable until Holmes did his whole break down of events at the end as he is known to do.

Judgement: Really funny, action packed, and a mystery that wasn't watered down; 9 out of 10.
